JLV TIP OF THE WEEK - Viewing Exposure (ILER) Records.pdf

<aside> 💡 What is ILER?
ILER stands for Individual Longitudinal Exposure Record. The goal of ILER is to provide a record of every Service members’ occupational and environmental health (OEH) exposures over the course of his or her career. ILER is a collaborative effort between the Department of Defense (DoD) and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to create a complete record of every Service members’ occupational and environmental health (OEH) exposures over the course of his or her career. ILER is designed to collate, present, and/or provide service-related exposure information for individuals. Its primary task is to present person-centric exposure data that will allow users, based on their roles, to view, export, and print a comprehensive, consolidated longitudinal exposure history of an individual (i.e., history connects person, time, place, and exposure event) that will be used for DoD and VA medical care, improve primary and secondary prevention measures, enhance comprehensive health surveillance, support disability evaluation and improve the benefits determination process. The ILER solution will provide a framework to inform and enhance DoD and VA timely medical care, medical surveillance, and disability evaluation, services, and benefits determination processes.
Currently the ILER Database contains the following:
Other categories will be added as ILER scope is increased
ILER includes the functionality to Search by Individual, Search by Location and Search by Exposure. Eventually, it will also include the functionality to Search by Health Effect.

<aside> 💡 What is VIBE?
VIBE stands for VA ILER for Benefits and Epidemiology. VIBE is an epidemiological, benefits/claims research and data science centric, premium file sharing environment. VIBE is a sub-project to ILER and will focus on raw data storage and storage of data working files for analytics, analysis, and research by VA personnel. VA researchers and Epidemiologists will have a virtual 'One Drive' drive to store, analyze, share cohort downloads from the ILER Application. VIBE will eventually host exposure data from the various resources enabling data comparisons and compilations that could not be performed via existing applications.
VIBE seeks to address the following challenges: Disparate exposure data sources, Reliance on platforms/tools that do not perform well with large data sets, the inability to analyze ILER data with other already accessible data, increasing congressional demands to make data available and meaningful to Veterans. This Mounted Volume is built on CxDW Azure Data Cloud and Analytic Platform and can support 250+ users. The exposure data that is captured and stored in VIBE is intended to be indefinite, reliable, and consistent. It can be accessed from Citrix desktops, GFE and future VMs and authorized data science tools.
VIBE will work in conjunction with ILER to allow ILER users to build Cohorts (Groups of veterans that have similar and specific exposure criteria) from ILER data, export the Cohorts from ILER and import the Cohorts as raw data into VIBE allowing analysis and expansion of research on Cohorts. Cohort data can oftentimes be more advantageous to researchers because it shows trends, patterns and cause and effect relationships. This research can then be used to perform predictive medical analysis, identity exposure related disabilities and inform medical treatment for exposure related symptoms.
